A clinic in Dharampeth, a hardware shop in Gondia, a coaching class near Sitabuldi and a fabrication unit in Butibori all have the same marketing problem: the customers are within twenty kilometres, they search on their phones, and the business is either invisible or shows a wrong phone number. This article lays out what actually moves the needle for a local business in Nagpur and Gondia, what you can do yourself, what is worth paying for, and a ninety-day plan to get there.
Start with Google Business Profile
Before a website, before ads, fix the listing that appears when someone searches "hardware shop near me" or "dentist Gondia". Google Business Profile is free and it is where most local searches end.
- Claim and verify the listing. Unclaimed profiles show whatever Google guessed.
- Match the name, address, phone and hours exactly to what is on your board, your website and your invoices. Inconsistencies hurt ranking and confuse customers.
- Choose the right primary category and add secondary ones.
- Add real photos of the shopfront, the inside, the team and the work. Update them every few months.
- Post once a week: an offer, a new item, a festival timing change.
- Turn on messaging and answer within the hour during business hours.
Local SEO beyond the profile
Local search ranking rests on three things: relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot move the shop, but you can work on the other two.
- Have a website, even a small one, with a page per service and a page per location you serve. "AC repair in Manish Nagar" and "AC repair in Gondia" are different searches and deserve different pages if you serve both.
- Put the same name, address and phone on the site as on the profile, with local business structured data so search engines and AI assistants can read it.
- Get listed consistently on the directories that matter here: JustDial, IndiaMART for B2B, Sulekha for services, and industry bodies.
- Write a few pages that answer questions customers ask on the phone. Those are the pages that get cited.

Reviews
Reviews decide the click after the ranking. The pattern that works is simple and most businesses never do it consistently: ask every satisfied customer, at the moment they are satisfied, with a direct link.
- Make a short link or QR code to your review page and put it on the bill, the counter and the WhatsApp thank-you message.
- Ask in person. "If you were happy, a Google review helps us a lot" works better than any automated message.
- Reply to every review, including the bad ones, politely and briefly. Readers judge the reply as much as the review.
- Never buy reviews or ask for them from staff and relatives. Google removes them and can suspend the profile.
WhatsApp marketing without getting blocked
WhatsApp is where Nagpur and Gondia customers actually are. It is also where businesses get their number banned by broadcasting to people who never agreed.
- Use a WhatsApp Business account with a catalogue, business hours and quick replies at minimum.
- For anything beyond a few hundred contacts, use the official WhatsApp Business API through a provider. It costs per message but it is the only route that scales without a ban.
- Collect opt-ins: a tick on the enquiry form, a message asking "Can we send you offers?", a QR code in the shop.
- Send rarely and usefully: a monthly offer, a service reminder, a festival greeting with a real discount. Daily broadcasts get muted and reported.
- Answer enquiries fast. Reply time is the single biggest factor in whether a WhatsApp lead converts.
Meta and Google ads on a small budget
A local business can run useful ads on ₹5,000 to 30,000 a month. What matters is targeting and what happens after the click.
- Google Search ads catch people who are already looking: "CA in Nagpur", "sofa repair Gondia". Bid on a small set of exact phrases, restrict to a radius around the business, and send clicks to a page about that service, not the home page.
- Meta (Facebook and Instagram) ads create demand for things people were not searching for: a new menu, a festival sale, a coaching batch opening. Target by radius and interest, use short vertical video, and send people to WhatsApp or a lead form.
- Set a daily cap, run for two weeks, then look at cost per enquiry, not clicks. Kill what does not bring calls or messages.
- Turn off ads in the times you cannot answer the phone. Leads that wait till morning are mostly lost.
Landing pages for every campaign
Sending ad traffic to the home page wastes money. A landing page for each campaign has one message, one offer, a phone button, a WhatsApp button and a short form, and loads in under two seconds on a mid-range Android phone. It should say the area you serve, show a photo of the real place, and repeat the price or offer from the ad so the visitor knows they are in the right place.
Measuring: GA4 and call tracking
If you cannot say which channel brought the last twenty customers, you cannot decide where to spend next month's budget.
- Install Google Analytics 4 and set up conversions for phone clicks, WhatsApp clicks and form submissions.
- Use UTM parameters on every ad and every WhatsApp broadcast link so GA4 can tell them apart.
- Use a separate tracking number for ads, or at least ask every caller "How did you hear about us?" and write it down. Call tracking services exist in India for a small monthly fee.
- Check Google Business Profile's own insights monthly: searches, direction requests, calls.
- Keep one simple sheet: month, channel, spend, enquiries, customers. That sheet is your marketing strategy.

What to do yourself and what to hire out
An owner or a capable staff member can manage Google Business Profile, ask for reviews, run WhatsApp and post on social media. These need consistency more than skill.
Hire help for the website and landing pages, for ad setup and monthly optimisation, for GA4 and tracking setup, and for content in Marathi, Hindi and English that reads well. A retainer of a few thousand rupees a month for ad management is reasonable for a small business; be suspicious of anyone who promises rankings or a fixed number of leads.
Ask any agency to show you the tracking before you pay for ads. If they cannot show cost per enquiry, they are selling impressions.
A 90-day plan
| Period | Focus | What gets done |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1 to 15 | Foundations | Claim and complete Google Business Profile, fix name, address and phone everywhere, set up WhatsApp Business, install GA4 with conversions |
| Days 16 to 30 | Reviews and content | Review link on bills and counter, first ten reviews asked for, one service page and one location page written |
| Days 31 to 60 | First campaigns | One Google Search campaign on exact local phrases, one Meta campaign to WhatsApp, landing page for each, daily budget capped |
| Days 61 to 90 | Measure and adjust | Compare cost per enquiry by channel, pause what fails, double what works, start monthly WhatsApp offers to opted-in customers |
By day ninety you should know your cost per enquiry from each channel, have a profile that shows correct information with recent reviews, and have a small set of pages that rank for the searches your customers actually type.
